IWSG: Creative Evolution

Hey everyone;

Is anybody really here this month? Between NaNoWriMo, Holiday preparations, weather changes - and sometimes weather damages - who has time to blog?

I don't have any of those excuses, or reasons. I'm just lazy this time of year. But, I'm also pretty busy learning my new day job right now so my creativity has tanked worse than usual. There is only so much space in my brain for typing right now - letters, emails, orders, notes on how to do my job and use all the electronic equipment. Poor internet connections (or slow equipment) that freezes my outbox. Yikes, it seems the more we rely on technology, the slower the data works. Exactly like all the synapses in my brain!

Better get off that subject or this post will turn into a rant . . .

This month's IWSG optional question is: How has your creativity in life evolved since you began writing?

Hmm, I had to read that question several times and still, I'm not sure I've absorbed it. "Creativity in life?" I'm not sure how creative I am in real life. When the kids were little, I took up crewl stichery, and embroidery, experimented with cooking, achieved several disastrous art projects to keep them occupied and learning, pretended to learn to fish.

Since I started writing - and the kids aged through teenagers and outgrew me - just about all my focus has been writing related. Or home improvement. Research into interesting details/descriptions of homes, businesses, careers, settings, has me looking more outward, into the world in general. I guess I see more more sides of things, not just my own upbringing and world view. Makes me more interested in traveling, landscaping, decorating.

Well, that's how I interpret this question. Maybe writing has expanded my mind more than just reading.

Thank you Alex - and the Insecure Writers Support Group Team - for this very thoughtful question this month. Please be sure to visit the IWSG co-hosts: Ellen @ The Cynical Sailor, Ann V. Friend, JQ Rose, and Elizabeth Seckman.

Finally, I'm outta here for the rest of the year. Good luck to all the NaNo'ers, Happy Holidays, and congratulations to all those who submitted to the 2018 IWSG Anthology. Can't wait to read who the winners are.

See ya next year!!

Glad you got a new job! That's great news.
I think that question could be answered many ways. And what a trouper that you learned to fish for your kids.

Without imagination, we wouldn't have anything in the world. Writing spurs that imagination.

Hi Donna,

This is your last post of the year!! Well... HAPPY HOLIDAYS! Hope your new job goes well. I hope you have time for some good reading! I know that always keeps you busy. I may have something for you, if you have the time.

Yes, I took up interests as my kids grew up--trying to be the "cool mom" I guess. Learning a new job does sap your energy leaving little for creativity. Good luck with the job and have a great break from the blog!

Seeing more sides of things is definitely a way that creativity/writing has evolved your life. You should try to do some of those things that you become interested in through research. :)

Good luck with your day job. Sometimes with work it's hard to get much time to write. Have a great rest of the year!

Hi Donna - so glad you got the new job ... I find it takes about 3 months to settle in ... so by January 2019 you should be a lot more comfortable. Slow internet is a pain - that I agree with.

Sounds like the kids taught you a lot - but you enabled them to grow up despite experimenting with cooking! Love it ...

Good luck for the next two months - enjoy the learning and the absorbing and see you next year - cheers Hilary

Best O' Luck to ya with the new job, WILD THING! I also will be looking for a new job in early 2019, after I make my move to Carson City. Hopefully that comes much sooner than later. (I've had more than enough of Reno, "The Biggest Little Ghetto In The World".)

Seeing more ins than outs is sure more of a win than a lose.

Good luck with your new job, Donna.
Like you, writing affected me deeply too: I see more and understand more now about people, their actions, and motivations than I ever did before I started writing.

Sounds like you've done just fine in the imaginative side of life! It's so much easier to craft things when the kids are young, isn't it? I loved having so much to do with them. Now, like you, I mostly write for a creative outlet, and garden. I looove to garden!

Congrats on the new job. I had to read this month's question several times, too. Like you, I did a lot of those creative things when my kids were young. I like how you phrased "They outgrew me". Kids do that, don't they? Since this is your last post for the year, Happy holidays and good luck in 2019.

Don't get me started on slow connections. The last year or so our connection at home has dragged. Netflix stalls out, HBO Go lags. It's the worst. Oh, right, I said don't get me started...haha.

Have a great December. We'll see in you in 2019!
